The adventures of a bookworm

Read: December

Read: December

The final month of the year always includes a reading sprint. I wanted to surpass my goal of 65 books and in last weeks post I talked about trying to reach 67. I ended up in between those two at a total of 66 books in 2017.

So what did I read last month? Read on and find out! As always they have been given a rating X out of 5 and a short review. If you click the title it will take you to the books’ Goodreads page.

December

Hunger by Roxane Gay ****
This book is a memoir about Roxanes relationship with her body. Sometimes the stories were repetitive, but overall it was an impressive collection of stories and a great insight in living in a fat body.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows‘ by J.K. Rowling *****
I keep learning new things when relistening to these books. I love it.

Murder on the Orient Express‘ by Agatha Christie ****
A book club read, but not a very complex one. Just interesting and enjoyable, great for a quick read.

The Golden Compass‘ by Philip Pullman *****
I am rereading the first two books so I can finally finish the whole trilogy before starting on the newly release prequels. I am really enjoying the books so far, they are way more complex than the first layer, which is written for children. The children in the books are also written very well which is nice.

Warcross‘ by Marie Lu ****
I really enjoyed the world that was built for Warcross, I was however extremely disappointed to find out it was not a stand alone book and I now have to wait for the sequel to be released.

1984‘ by George Orwell ****
Definitely a great novel, just not as good a dystopia as ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ which scares the crap out of me way more than 1984 does. Maybe because we are already so used to being constantly watched.

The Fall of Icarus‘ by Ovid ****
A little black classic with a few myths written down by Ovid. I really enjoy greek mythology so this was a nice quick read.

The Tempest‘ by William Shakespeare ****
I enjoyed the set up of this play, but I am mostly excited to read Margaret Atwoods retelling in ‘Hagseed’.

Death and the Seaside‘ by Alison Moore ****
Another quick read to get my numbers up. A short story with a nice plottwist. I really enjoyed the story within a story component of the plot and I thought it worked really well.

Review December

I finished 9 books this month! Mostly due to choosing some very thin volumes and finishing some books I had already almost finished. Last months the plan was as follows:

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ by J.K. Rowling
  • Hunger’ by Roxane Gay
  • 1984’ by George Orwell
  • The Golden Compass’ by Philip Pullman (the first book of ‘His Dark Materials’)
  • The Fall of Icarus’ by Ovid
  • Murder on the Orient Express’ by Agatha Christie

I would like to say I nailed it! I finished all of the above and some extra to make it over the 65 goal! Let’s see if I can keep it up next year!

January

I am writing this blogpost a week into January and I have already managed to finish three books. I won’t add them to my reading list, but let’s see what else I want to read this month.

– ‘The Amber Spyglass‘ by Philip Pullman (last one of the trilogy ‘His Dark Materials’)
– ‘The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks‘ by e. lockhart
– ‘The Edible Woman‘ by Margaret Atwood (January’s book club read)
– ‘Hagseed‘ by Margaret Atwood

Will I manage to stick to the plan again? Who knows… What are you planning to read this month? Let me know in the comments below, I would love to know!
