Last week there was no post, my first missed one since I started. I am sorry if you came to the blog expecting a post! The same goes for yesterday, but I felt that today was a better day to post my New Years Resolutions, since it is the last day of 2015.
As you might have read in my ‘Looking Back’ post (find it here) 2015 was quite the turbulent and exiting year. I think it was mostly a year of stepping outside my comfort zone and finding my interest in Architecture back. The last weeks of 2015 also brought a big change, one I did not see coming but is probably for the best. Although I am still dealing with this change I also think it is an opportunity to rediscover myself in 2016. Just in time for this I spotted the book ‘The Happiness Project’ in a bookstore in the train station in Delft.
I am halfway through and hope to finish it today. Although the book is mostly a story of a very privileged woman on her journey to become happy, I have found some useful information in it that I want to try to apply to my own New Years Resolutions. For starters I think it is great to change the focus of your resolutions every month. This way you don’t get bored with doing the same ‘new’ thing, but you get to challenge yourself every month, instead of just January 1st. She also wrote ’12 commandments’ for herself to help keep her resolutions, these are mine:
My 2016 commandments
- Treat Yo Self (Because I deserve it)
- Say Yes (Still trying to stretch my comfort zone)
- Enjoy Now, Cherish Later (Live now, so you have memories to remember later)
- Kind Heart, Open Mind (The best way to approach any situation)
- Find What Feels Good (From yogawithadrienne)
- Do it Now
- Work Hard and then:
- Let it Go (Great song too)
- Say No (Because I know best what I like and don’t like)
- You Are Not Alone (Friends and family are forever)
- You Do You (Don’t be ashamed of liking/enjoying something)
- Failure is an Option (Don’t be afraid of it)
These are my commandments and I hope to remember them and carry them with me through the entire year.
My 2016 resolutions
I found coming up with specific monthly themes a lot harder. I also don’t want to challenge myself too much the first half of the year, since I will be graduating and although I said ‘Failure is an option’, that doesn’t mean I feel like setting myself up for failure. I also haven’t yet completely planned out these resolutions per month except that I want to start in January with ‘Energy’ and February with ‘Mind’. I think those two things will also help me during my graduating process and hopefully help to reduce stress. Therefor my resolutions are more like last year, things I know I want to accomplish this year.
Energy, Body and Mind
- Sleep enough, not too much
- 10.000 steps every day (most days)
- Finish the Yoga Camp from Yoga with Adriene
- Complete 6 series of Headspace
- Finish the ‘Couch to 5K’
Focus, Study and Work
- Do one thing at a time
- Reduce phone use (you really don’t need to play that game for 2 hours..)
- Study as much as needed
- Start a webshop (more on this later)
- Be a Bookstagram and do a 30 day book challenge (follow me on Instagram to see this happen)
Friends and Family
- Be there (or be square)
- Random Acts of Kindness
- Listen and be present
Hobbies and other
- Try something new at least twice a month
- Start a bookclub
- Cook from a recipe book at least once a month
- Visit a museum every month
So those are my ‘Commandments’ for 2016 and my resolutions. It looks like a lot, but I want to challenge myself this year and after graduating I want to still know that I have stuff I like to do.
