Review: Gone Girl

This book has been on my to read list ever since the movie came out. However I cheated. I read the plot on Wikipedia first.. I know, horrible thing to do, but I heard so many people talking about this amazing plottwist and I could not help myself. I still wanted to read the book though, maybe even wanted to read it because I had read the plot and wanted to know everything instead of the quick synopsis. So in some spare hours in Milan I finally read the book and I can tell you that I will be watching the movie really soon too.

What’s the book about?

Since everything in this book is about the plottwist, I won’t give too much away. But the book is about Nick Dunne and Amy Elliot Dunne, married for five years but on their anniversary Amy suddenly goes missing. Nick soon becomes a suspect and has to keep his lies and deceits in balance to make sure everyone will believe he is innocent. But is he? And where is Amy?

The book is set up in alternating chapters. It starts with a chapter from Nicks point of view in the ‘now’ and then alternates with chapters from Amy’s diary which describe how they met and the development of their relationship.

What did I think of it?

I really liked it. Even though I already knew what was going to happen, reading it is still different. I also think it was like reading the book for the second time, now noticing the small signs that were sprinkled in the story from the start adding an extra dimension. There was also never a dull moment for me in this book, I wanted to keep reading it. The ending was surprising for me, I did not love it but I think it did really suit the book and the characters. The book left me wondering what on earth is wrong with some people and also fascinated with the cleverness of it all.

Should you read it?

Hell yeah. If you are into reading about a good mystery, this is definitely something for you. Even if you already know the plot (like I did) it is still fascinating to follow the lives of these two people and read about how they did what they did.
