Thoughts: Looking back on 2016

Thoughts: Looking back on 2016

It is that time of year again, time to reflect on the past year and perhaps set some resolutions for the new year. Instead of creating two different posts like I have done previous years, I decided to combine them into one this year.

Let’s reflect

So first let’s reflect on the past year. I started 2016 at a low point, but with a non-fiction-could-definitely-be-defined-as-self-help book. I decided to write down my ’12 commandments’ (inspired by said book) and I wrote down some starter resolutions, I have failed most of those looking back. However, reading the commandments back, they still resonate me and I even feel like I have internalized some, if not most, of them. Although the year started on a low, it did mean there was only one way to go; up! Embracing the ‘Say Yes’ and ‘Treat Yo Self’ mentality I have gained new experiences, new friends and have experienced a lot of random adventures. I have delved back into my bookshelf, reading a total of 60 books this year, emerged myself in movies and discovered new types of media content and their creators. I have taken a break from blogging, to rediscover why I started, and what I want from it, only to start again with regained gusto and a slightly different approach. I suppose that to live is to change, or to ‘Find what feels good’, and I am excited for this next year and its opportunities.

What’s next?

I am graduating in January, which means ‘real’ life is just around the corner. It is time to look for a job, try to define a career path, move into ‘non-student’ housing and who knows what else. I don’t know what will happen, but looking back at last years 12 commandments, I know I want to continue to live by them. So for repetition sake:

  1. Treat Yo Self
  2. Say Yes (Adventure is just around the corner)
  3. Enjoy Now, Cherish Later (Live now, so you have memories to remember later)
  4. Kind Heart, Open Mind (The best way to approach any situation)
  5. Find What Feels Good
  6. Do it Now
  7. Work Hard and then:
  8. Let it Go
  9. Say No
  10. You Are Not Alone (Friends and family are forever)
  11. You Do You (Don’t be ashamed of liking/enjoying something)
  12. Failure is an Option (Don’t be afraid of it)

I don’t know where life is going to take me, but I do hope to keep on writing and reading. Do you have any plans for 2017? Have you ever tried to write your own ’12 Commandments’? Let me know in the comments below! Thank you for reading my blog and I will see you in 2017 :)
